2026 is the 250th anniversary of the United States! Ohio Open Doors plans to host more than 250 events in 2026 and have at least one in each of our state’s 88 counties. Ohio Open Doors 2026 is another opportunity for your community to be a part of America 250-Ohio.
In 1920, Canton’s Troop 5 began building a cabin downriver from Zoarville. A year later, the newly-formed Canton Scout Council chose a nearby meadow for its summer camp. Known as the Wilderness Camp, it was renamed Camp Tuscazoar in 1925. For 66 years, Camp Tuscazoar was shaped by the many scouts and scouters who visited these hills. Whether it was planting trees, digging a ditch or painting buildings, they left a permanent mark of their presence.
A short hike will begin at the W.C. Moorhead Museum and visit Toms’ Chapel, the stockade entrance, Hoover Lodge and its adjacent amphitheater, with an option to hike to Pioneer Point.
A longer hike will also depart from the W.C. Moorhead Museum, with stops at the stockade, Tom’s Chapel, Hoover Lodge, stockade, and Tom’s Chapel and on to Pioneer Point. Hikers will then descend the hill past Chief Deaver’s Cabin and the old dining hall site, through the tunnel to the lower RR bed for a hike to the Zoarville Station Bridge. Hikers will return through Old Campsite and the original Troop 5 Cabin site, ascend the hill to the new Troop 5 Cabin and then arrive at Central Camp.
An Open House will be held at Hoover Lodge on Sept. 19. Originally designed to serve as a training center, Hoover Lodge and its adjacent outdoor amphitheater were dedicated in 1949. Named in honor of North Canton industrialist Frank G. Hoover, and funded by his donations, Hoover Lodge stands on the site of the first Pipestone camp honors ceremony.
