LAND PURCHASES UNIFY, EXPAND CAMP TUSCAZOAR PROPERTY
For Immediate Release – November 2, 2009
ZOARVILLE, Ohio – The Camp Tuscazoar Foundation has purchased 113 acres of the original Camp Tuscazoar property from a Dover family. The purchase will leave only 22 acres of the original camp not in Foundation hands. However, as part of this purchase, the Foundation has been given the legal right to utilize the remaining acreage, so camp patrons will continue to enjoy the use of the entire camp.
The newly-acquired land tract roughly covers an area between White Eyes Brook (below One Leg campsite) and Shingask Brook (which runs below Troop One Cabin) and includes the old rifle and archery ranges; the Johnny Appleseed, Wilderness and Big Tulip campsites; the Ray Moore Shelter and much of Icky’s Trail. A grant from the Clean Ohio Fund’s Green Space Conservation Program, which is administered through the Ohio Public Works Commission, made the purchase possible.
In a separate transaction, the Foundation has also agreed to purchase an additional 82.7 acres south of the original camp property. Several options are being considered to best use this property for the benefit of Camp Tuscazoar patrons. This purchase was also made possible by a grant from the Clean Ohio Fund’s Green Space Conservation Program and assistance from The Wilderness Center in Wilmot, Ohio.
“We are thrilled to finalize these agreements,” said Bob Spencer, president of the Camp Tuscazoar Foundation. “With these purchases, we have finally unified the original camp property and have helped to preserve our secluded atmosphere.
The Camp Tuscazoar Foundation was founded with the purpose of purchasing, maintaining and perpetuating Camp Tuscazoar. After 23 years, our goal of acquiring the entire camp property has nearly been achieved. We are extremely grateful to the Green Space Conservation Program and The Wilderness Center for their willingness to assist us in this effort. Without their contributions, these historic land acquisitions would not have been possible.”
The Camp Tuscazoar Foundation, Inc. is an Ohio non-profit corporation founded in 1986 for the purpose of purchasing, maintaining and perpetuating Camp Tuscazoar for use by scouts, church groups, school groups and other community organizations. Camp Tuscazoar is located on Boy Scout Road, two miles east of Zoar, near Zoarville.
